Siam Benzoin

Styrax tonkinensis

peace. warmth. grounding.

Benzoin resin is the dried exudation from the pierced bark of several species of trees in the Styrax genus. Differing from Styrax benzoin which is the name reserved for the Sumatran variation, Siam benzoin presents with a lighter milkier appearance and carries a more complex aromatic profile owing largely to its growing conditions within the mountains of Laos.

Scent - sweet, vanilla, bitter almond

Application - perfumery, incense, medicinal

Sustainably sourced - Laos

Correspondence - Sun

Premium grade Siam benzoin such as this dissolves fully within alcohol to tincture for perfumery or a range of medicinal purposes, though not so in carrier oils - some use Benzyl Benzoate, a compound found in abundance in Benzoin resin to facilitate blending with carrier oils.

Yielding a sweet dense smoke, Siam benzoin weaves its magic best when burnt as a compound incense alongside other sacred resins such as Frankincense papyrifera + black copal, adding a powerful element of peace, calm and grounding to a blend. Energetically it is perfectly suited to enhance focus with dreamwork, astral travel + meditation focusing on emotional balance.

Resins will not burn on their own, they will require heat from either an oil burner or charcoal disk.

▵ using an oil burner releases much more of the true aroma of the resin than charcoal disks and also creates far less smoke. Place a piece of foil in the well of your oil burner and lay a small piece of resin on top; this prevents lots of mess and cleaning after use. Electric oil burners also work well.
▿ Never leave an oil burner un-attended. Keep out of reach of children.

▵ Fill your charcoal burner 3/4 full with sand or rocks to absorb some of the heat. Then place your burner on a heat resistant surface. Using tongs to hold the charcoal tablet, light it following the instructions provided with your charcoal. Place the hot charcoal onto the bed of sand inside your charcoal burner and allow the charcoal 5-15 minutes to fully come to temperature, indicated by a layer of ash forming on the tablet before carefully adding the desired quantity of resin to the top of the hot disk.

▿ Never leave a charcoal burner un-attended. Keep out of reach of children.
